Purpose: To assess population-level trends in children's dietary intake and weight status before (2003) and after (2011) the implementation of the Food and Nutrition Policy for Nova Scotia Public Schools.

Key findings:
We observed positive trends in diet quality and reductions in energy intake and the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages. Although the prevalence of overweight remained relatively stable we observed a slight increase in obesity from 2003 to 2011.

Greater support for both healthy eating and active living promotion in schools is essential, and there is a case for more to be done to create supportive environments within communities to support sustained behaviour change.
